The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel ★★★★★

The film entirely responsible for my love of cinema, this remains stupefyingly fantastic - a ludicrous, delightful confection of a film always at risk of folding in on itself like a collapsed choux pastry.
I would argue that even detractors of Anderson's signature style might find it justified here, given that the bulk of the narrative is a man fictionalising his own life, transfiguring what is actually a rather miserable story plagued by war and death into a rollicking adventure tale.
Ralph Fiennes gives such a thoroughly accomplished comedic performance here that it's rather amazing he has never been asked to repeat it in recent years.
A gorgeous, wry, ultimately rather heartbreaking tour de force. For me, it's Anderson's pièce de résistance.
