Brawl in Cell Block 99 ★★★★

Brawl In Cell Block 99 can be summed up to a very unforgiving set of circumstances for a man that will not quit by any means
Vince Vaughn is an animal in this, and we see a side that True Detective only gave us glimpses of. He’s a man that has morals to some extent, but they definitely flow into grey areas more often than not, and that’s why his character is so great
This film keeps taking dives further and further into madness, yet I still questioned just how everything would turn out, when in reality, the writing was on the wall from the beginning
Zahler’s writing is comical when it needs to be, upsetting when it needs to be, and harsh when it needs to be (which is at all times)
The action felt odd at times, and some editing bogged down the gravitas behind certain events, but there was still a lot of impact, and quite literally
If Dragged Across Concrete is as good as I think it’s going to be, I can confidently say that S. Craig Zahler will become one of my favorite filmmakers within recent years. Both of his films are concise slow burns that end up being wildly entertaining from start to finish, and I love every second of it
