Certain Women ★★★★

Kelly Reichardt continues to astonish me. She is without a doubt one of the most unique directors working today. Each one of her films is exquisitely directed, and you're always going to be in for an interesting watch. Certain Women is no exception, and in fact, it's one of her best. I can't describe exactly what mood it puts you in or how it does so, but I guess if I could it would lose some of its magic. And that's really the best way to describe the film: magic. The backdrops are so painterly I think they are literal paintings, the performances are measured and soulful, the melancholy is heavy and deep, and the whole thing is so darned beautiful to watch. Reichardt is a magician, and this film is a magic trick
