I know I’ve seen many say that The Elephant Man is the least Lynchian film from David Lynch. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d put it on a sliding scale of most-to-least Lynchian in his filmography, but The Elephant Man isn’t lacking in attributes that make it Lynchian. Eraserhead introduced Lynch to the world, and formed the basis of “Lynchian”. Yet, that’s only half of it. The Elephant Man introduced the world to the second half of the equation: the humanization. People are…

Unmasked Part 25 1989
I expected to like Unmasked, Pt. 25, but I didn’t expect to love it so much! The Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite horror franchise, and this plays off of it perfectly. A genuinely funny parody all the way through. Shelley trying on a hockey mask was adorable.
Tons of amazing, gory kills. Way more than in a typical slasher, I think we got 5 or 6 in the first 15 or so minutes. Dry, British humor that isn’t…

20 Million Miles to Earth 1957
Harryhausen’s effects really are magic. I watched Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, and Clash of the Titans so many times growing up that just seeing a Harryhausen monster is soothing. Looking at the trajectory of visual effects, especially the overwhelming reliance on CG the past couple decades, it’s disheartening to think that artists like Harryhausen are all but lost in feature films. Give me one Harryhausen effects job for every 20 big budget Marvel/DC/Disney/whatever and I’d be ecstatic.

The Tales of Hoffmann 1951
The Tales of Hoffman is genuinely one of the best looking films I've seen. It's surely not for everyone since it's a film adaptation of an opera, and it's markedly a fusion of opera and traditional cinema. One of the most interesting aspects of this fusion is how voices and bodies are uncoupled. Powell and Pressburger are drunk with the power of the camera. Bazin said it best when talking about The Tales of Hoffman, "The cinema thus creates here…

TRON: Legacy 2010
I haven't seen Tron: Legacy since it was in theaters, and I remember being so excited to see it in IMAX 3D. That was definitely a formative moviegoing experience - emphasis on the experience over the movie. I've loved the original Tron, both before and after I saw Legacy, and it's the version I've always revisited. I can't even count how many times I've watched the original at this point, but it's definitely one of the films I've rewatched the most in…
