Endless praise to James Wan for making this. I was giddy the last 15 minutes, and then the way it just… ends. It feels unreal that this is a wide release movie in 2021.
I came in expecting the James Wan giallo, but what I got was basically a y2k slasher. The giallo influences are there - black gloves, police procedural mystery, psychic connection - however the y2k music cues are too powerful. What blew my mind was Frank Hennenlotter vibes!!! Outside of New York City!!! Wan weaves everything together seamlessly, and sends Malignant down the road at a hundred miles a minute. This absolutely will not work for everyone, but I had so much fun.
