Anthony Peronto’s review published on Letterboxd:
As one of the few who wholeheartedly loved Godzilla (2014) warts and all, I guess I’ll be dying on the hill of King Of The Monsters as well. I love my big tall son. And my sweet angel Mothra, who should’ve got her own movie over Kong.
As incidents and story are to musicals, the human element is just the connective thread between the fight scenes. And the humans this time, like Dougherty’s previous film Krampus, are resentful stereotypes full of angst. Insignificant mortals with monsters that represent both their inner demons and reactions to global influence. But for all its human faults, it’s the experience of the monsters that thrill. And my goodness, in IMAX, the action is phenomenal and the soundtrack and sound design shake you to your very core.
It’s the modern-day Destroy All Monsters, which also had terrible human subplots and dialogue clashing with insanely-fun monster battles. When I exited the theater, confronted by an Alaskan mountain-range, I looked up and half-expected to see a titan on a mountaintop. And for that sense of terrifying wonder, fuck it, it gets an extra half-star.
