• Synecdoche, New York

    Synecdoche, New York

    ★★

What the fuck is this movie. Very trippy, but also long and kinda boring and often feels like it's moment after moment rather than parts of a cohesive narrative, despite callbacks and throughlines. And what's the deal with Olive's green stool? I think I have to be smarter or something to get this movie

  • The Witch

    The Witch

    ★★★

This is obviously a good movie, but religion really turns me off and this movie is full of it, even if it is in service of condemning it, so I did not enjoy watching it. Religious people be weird

  • The Night of the Hunter

    The Night of the Hunter

    ★★★★

I grew up reading books like this movie, feels very nostalgic. Father gets arrested and taken away, new guy comes, kids don't like new guy, mother dies, kids run away, find adoptive family, very sweet. I wonder what a modern day version of this movie would look like. I feel like we don't revere family as much as they did back in the 50s. And we're in more of a surveillance state than back then, which makes stories like this impossible to tell. A shame really

  • Eraserhead

    Eraserhead

    ★★★

Eraserhead sure is a thing that claims to be a movie. Wild that this was released in theaters. I did not get this movie

  • Badlands

    Badlands

    ★★★

I really liked the first half, then it got boring. I don't know what this movie was going for, very strange movie and not the sort of strange I usually go for. It's definitely a movie though

    Jennifer's Body

    ★★★★★

Feels like a really great episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With a fantastic soundtrack as well, very interesting music choices, I wanna see a video essay about the music in this movie. Highly recommend

  • The Suicide Squad

    The Suicide Squad

    ★★★

    I liked the gore

  • Jawbreaker

    Jawbreaker

    ★★★★★

up there with Heathers in movies that are much better than Mean Girls. idk why but I love this subgenre of high school movies

  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding

    My Big Fat Greek Wedding

    ★★★

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is not written well. The characters do not talk like humans, the romantic leads do not get to know each other like humans, and the whole thing just relies on romantic comedy cliches rather than making its own story. You could make the greeks jewish instead and nothing about the plot of the movie would change. Watching this the day after Bend it Like Beckham, a movie with romance between an Indian and a white…

  • Bend It Like Beckham

    Bend It Like Beckham

    ★★★★

Great movie, very relatable and sweet and whatnot. It's weird though how little the protagonist cares about her sister's wedding. I can't imagine prioritizing a soccer game over a sibling's wedding unless I didn't care at all about that sibling, but we see that they do have a relationship so it's very weird

  • The Long Walk Home

    The Long Walk Home

    ★★★

This movie cares more about its rich white woman who deigns to give rides to black people than about any of the black people who are the actual protagonists of the boycott. Pathetic

  • The Ape Star

    The Ape Star

    ★★★

I watched the English dub because there was no subtitles available afaik. The voice acting was subpar, but fine. The Ape Star is not the most entertaining movie, but goddamn is it sweet. I cried multiple times. It's a very simple sweet sincere children's story like some of the books I read growing up. I can't give it a glowing recommendation, but if you're interested, definitely check it out, it's pretty short
