Flee

Flee ★★★★

Undeniably brutal, especially in its commendably specific exploration of how the trauma of the refugee experience trickles down into everyday life long after the fact; but Rasmussen does well to avoid the more questionable tropes and impulses the topic seems to inspire in most documentaries that deal with it: Amin is never flattened into an abstract symbol for a larger issue, nor does the ultimately hopeful tone feel contrived; and the movie goes to great lengths not to exploitatively wallow in the sadness of the story it tells.
