Alan Mattli’s review published on Letterboxd:
Pretty fun spiritual sequel to Spike Jonze's Adaptation – one of the Nicolas Cage movies this one, tellingly, does not namecheck – that leverages Cage's bizarre meta star persona to quite amusing effect, and without getting bogged down by excessive, narratively overbearing referentiality. Cage and Pascal are fantastic, and it's nice to see that Gormican and Etten don't take too many potshots at its star's genuine passion for the art of acting. That said, most of the structural playfulness is lifted straight from Adaptation without much of an idea what to do with it, and the comedy is too hit and miss to really mask that. Still, a good time at the movies; and if it manages to implant the idea that there is artistic value in non-naturalistic acting in one or two audience members, it will have done some public service too.
