Windfall

Windfall ★★

It's a definite improvement over McDowell's abominable The Discovery, which was so self-seriously dour it bent right back into parody. Here, he at least allows himself to capitalise a little bit on the absurdity of the situation he's concocted, and he's helped tremendously by a genuinely wonderful supporting turn from Jesse Plemons (who's really one of Hollywood's best at the moment, isn't he). Some pretty nifty location work too. Too bad the movie, much like The Discovery before it, never really thinks beyond its one-sentence premise, so it's hardly surprising it eventually runs out of ideas and ends up with the most basic, most unevocative resolution imaginable.
