Vaguely reminiscent of 2014's Two Days, One Night in its camerawork and tone of hopelessness, the pacing of Dark is the Night is what ultimately drags it down. I feel much of the time that preceded its climax didn't carry the weight I'd hoped it would; I was hoping for something to develop, rather than to simply be documented. I feel this criticism is subjective as that might've been Alix Jr.'s intention.
I applaud Adolfo Alix Jr. for tackling something topical with very organic results; without sugarcoating, he beautifully captures the setting and hardships of the Filipino people. While I had qualms with its pace, there's no questioning the phenomenal performances and effort put into the film.
