A light, brisk jog; amps up into a tense, strenuous sprint; only to blindside you, tackle you, send you careening to the floor. It’s sleek and precise and exhilarating; Bong Joon-Ho flexes his directorial prowess with this beast of a film. Nothing hits the fan the way Korean cinema does.
Did I enjoy this? It:
• stressed me out
• made my stomach turn
• tested my morals
But above all: it challenged me.
That’s a non answer, but sometimes those components must be placed on a pedestal — if a film is able to evoke those special emotions, it transcends into a higher echelon.
