Phantom Thread is a spectacle for PTA fans to marvel at. For the uninitiated, I’m not so sure.
This felt more like a showcase of skill rather than the grand narratives one might expect from Paul Thomas Anderson. There’s an oddity deeply woven into the fabric of this film and its characters that frustrated me; its coldness caused unease, it evoked uncomfortable laughter. It’s a bittersweet nightmare dressed in silver, lace and pearl. It’s madness.
Daniel Day Lewis plays seven of the dresses shown in the film and is phenomenal as all of them.
