Sad space movies are like, my jam.

Cemetery of Splendor 2015
While I'm still relatively green traversing the sprawling pastures of cinema, it's a distinct and unshakeable feeling stumbling upon an artist who very clearly operates on an elevated wavelength. My first dive into the works of Apichatpong Weerasethakul!

The Big Lebowski 1998
The older I get, the more the works of the Coens seem to click with me. Spent most of my life silently confused by the Lebowski praise; had a grand ol’ time last night laughing my ass off. I get it now, man.

Fantastic Planet 1973
Endlessly fascinating. Think I found my kid’s new Saturday morning cartoon, might tell them this is a historical recounting.
(Totally kidding)

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie 2001
Let’s say I hadn't watched the show—I could still see myself being blown away by the film. The quality of animation is taken to another level, but the blend of tone and soundtrack is what made my stomach flutter; the vibe of the Cowboy Bebop universe is unparalleled. Just oozes cool.

Perfect Days 2023
How many perfect days would you say you experience in a month? In the span of a week?
What constitutes your perfect day?
Myself? Sunny, fifteen-degree weather; a sweet cold brew paired with a warm, chocolatey pastry; a visit to the cinema, followed by a long stroll to the video store. Throw ice cream into mix—any flavour, any time of day, any season of the year—and I’m pretty much there.

The Settlers 2023
Filthy, unkempt hair, tattered uniforms, dirty skin; the sound of crackling fire and forks scraping against barren tin plates; the visibly arduous trek across a beautiful, sprawling Chilean archipelago on horseback. These things tickle my brain, especially when done well and convincingly—almost like Old West ASMR.
Stylistic praises aside, genocide and themes of identity are at the forefront in a brutally honest, unforgiving manner. Not an easy watch in the slightest. But I will allow myself to feel gratitude that Gálvez and his crew cast light on an atrocious snippet of history, a fragment I would never have come to know about otherwise. Solid directorial debut.
