Alex Kolpan’s review published on Letterboxd:
Despite being a pretty pleasant viewing, The Farewell came off somewhat underwhelming, and repetitive. The whole movie just feels like “so what should we do about Nai Nai” over and over. Still there’s some great cultural observations and pretty great dialogue throughout that keeps this from getting stale. I guess I just wish there was more character interrogation, as there’s so many seemingly complex characters that get short-changed. Though it didn’t move me emotionally in the way it has others this is still a very solid debut feature and I’m behind any filmmaker that has Mike Leigh and Edward Yang as reference points.
