Alex Rudolph’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is the second time-shifted take on Hamlet that Ethan Hawke has acted in.
Alexander Skarsgard, man. He makes interesting choices. He’s handsome as hell and built like an action star but when he makes big blockbusters, they’re like this or the Tarzan movie that I swear is pretty good. He weaponized his looks and affability to play a total piece of shit in Big Little Lies. What I’m saying is he’s become another performer like his co-star there and here, Nicole Kidman. Those are the most rewarding careers to follow.
The Northman is what I imagined The Revenant would be, which is to say it was a very good looking, flashy chunk of brutality. I was never bored.
Watching this, I felt bad I didn’t see it in theaters, both because I would have benefited from a big screen and because the film bombed. When I look back on this period in my life, when my wife was pregnant and then when we were raising a baby, there’s going to be a lot of that. I’m just going to have to get used to it.
