Midsommar ★★½

I feel like Ari Aster is so intent on making Great movies he's kind of leapfrogged over making good ones? Kind of like how his screenplays get mired early on in weighty exposition and character detail, only to become muddled on the way to the long-delayed gory payoff, which isn't as satisfying without some escalation along the way? His plotting is very point A to point C, crucially mistaking portent for tension, which is too bad because all the incidentals (production and costume design, casting and performances of the extras) make this a lot more engaging to watch than Hereditary imo.
