The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans

I’m going to need to let this film sit a bit, and probably read some think pieces. I THINK I get the overall gist, but it’s and odd duck and has a little bit too much plot going on, given that the details of the central crime are surely not the point. Cage delivers the goods as always, and I do appreciate his consistent mix of drug dependency, selfishness and commitment to trying to fix some version of ‘bad’ crime.
It certainly swaps the rage of the Ferrara version for something more intellectual but less satisfying.

It’s scary, yes, but also deeply satisfying and, for want of a better word, utterly charming in how well it executes it’s premise, both on a formal level and on a narrative one.

I had only heard of this film, and only watched it, for the sake of sating my IMDb top 250 obsession. So much better than I expected! But also not really one of the 250 greatest films of all time. But some outstanding performances, and a decent balance of observation,  action, comedy and pretentiousness. Reckon Martin McDonagh could do a rather nifty English language remake, if such a thing were called for, it has that In Bruges vibe (only 15 years earlier!)

While I don’t quite see the inner beauty that some people do in this film, I absolutely love the aesthetic: the colours, the acting styles, the commitment, and indeed success, in capturing the feel of a kinetic manga.
Sadly, like all too much of the manga I’ve read, the passion seems to be in service of a rather banal set of emotional beats.
