This is great family comedy. Noah Baumbach (of whom I admittedly was never like a MEGA-fan, until now that is) demonstrates a real understanding of just what makes the family dynamic so ripe for comedy, while also being sure to touch on the frustrations commonly found in family life and deliver some surprisingly hard hitting drama out of those moments. Performed wonderfully (Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller seriously need more roles like this) and directed confidently, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is easily one of my favorites of 2017, and another one I wish I could’ve seen on a theater screen (this thing BEAUTIFULLY shot).
I’ll say this though: I didn’t really buy how nonchalant Adam Sandler was while watching his 18-year-old daughter casually show off her tits in her student films. Shit like that is exactly why I don’t want kids, so I don’t have to live through that awkwardness.
