It’s interesting to see just how universal the experience of teenage angst is. Hubert reminded me eerily of myself as a teenager at times, and his mom eerily of my own. I think this movie goes a little extreme with that feeling at times, but it works because it’s trying to capture the feeling more than the beat by beat exact moments.

The most impressive aspect of this movie, its photorealism, is also the thing that makes it not work. By making everything photorealistic, many of the story beats that involve animals outside of the main cast stop working. Are we to believe the stampede are full of mindless creatures and can’t stop? Because when they’re just as photorealistic and full of life as the rest of the main cast of animals, it gets hard to believe. Whereas the original was able…
