    Only Lovers Left Alive

It's the closest I think I'll come to enjoying a vampire flick. Occasionally the characters are a bit too cliched, and make too obvious references to how hip they are. There's an arrogant scientific imperialism occasionally at play. There's no great vision here, either. And yet the ennui and love together make for something to watch, as well as the intrigue of vampire life in a modern and international setting. Plus, the whole Jarmusch sensibility and approach is a joy to watch anytime.

    McCabe & Mrs. Miller

This film is a tale well told, and yet perhaps not much beyond that. The story brings to life the rawness of life in the American West, and wants to subvert the honour themes often found in Westerns. But it doesn't pull off a coherent and cohesive vision, and watching it try to is unpleasant.

Anderson is often billed as a thinking man's director, and yet his popularity alludes me completely. One feels as if he's looking at himself, or at his movie, the whole time. Perhaps it's pretentiousness as others have said. Perhaps it's a lack of clear, artistic vision. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I keep feeling as if I'm in the hands of a charlatan every time I watch one of his films. I won't be doing it again.
