David Fincher: how can I convey that it’s the 1970s in a single color
David Fincher: MUSTARD YELLOW EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!
Netflix really has planted a flag on the Teen/YA market, huh?
Jennifer Aniston and Dolly Parton notwithstanding, the combined talents of director Anne Fletcher, writer Kristin Hahn, and cinematographer Elliot Davis really make Dumplin’ pop. I went in expecting pretty average teen fare and got a surprisingly lovely movie, on all levels. Very glad I gave it a chance.
No other superhero film like this one in the world. Shyamalan has some really smart and interesting things to say about depression and masculinity here, with a sheen of comics deconstruction on top.
Actually, now that I think about it, a lot of superhero comics have tried to do something similar to Unbreakable, but they’re almost always too heavy-handed. Shyamalan found precisely the right balance with David and Elijah and they way they’re both drowning, in diametrically opposed fashions.
