Death Proof

Death Proof ★★★★½

Some thoughts:
1. This is the best Tarantino film by FAR. (For the record, my ranking of his other films I've seen so far would be this > Kill Bill Vol. II > Kill Bill Vol. I > Pulp Fiction > The Hateful Eight. This is not a popular ranking but it is the one in my heart.)

2. The dialogue is so entertaining and believable within the world presented. It's heavily stylized, but it works, and it's different than Tarantino's usual writing style that I kind of hate. I would love to sit in a diner with these women and just listen to them talk for hours.

3. Entertaining is the perfect word to describe this movie. It's a cheap B-movie that I loved watching. Not every film needs to be as profound as The Mirror.

4. Mary Elizabeth Winstead in a cheerleader uniform made me straight.

5. Tarantino works best behind the camera. That's not even a dig at his appearance, I just don't think his cameo added anything to this film. The same can be said about the absurd number of foot-shots. Watch porn at home, Quentin.

6. That was one of the most exhilarating finales I've ever seen. I don't understand how Zoe Bell didn't die while filming it but I'm glad that she didn't. She's a cool gal.

7. The lack of any formal narrative structure or attention paid to point of view was initially concerning, but I ended up having too much fun to care. Characters fall in and out of this movie, but we get a really good sense of who they are when they're around.

8. The grind-house aesthetic and rough editing generally worked for me. There were a handful of moments where it became a distraction (the random black-and-white segment, some dialogue getting cut off/repeated, etc.) but I thought it was a cool concept overall.

9. Did I mention that this was super entertaining? It was super entertaining.

10. Thank you Lucy for (strongly) recommending me this. I put it off for a while but I'm very happy that I finally watched it. I feel empowered.
