Jacob’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Young Girls of Rochefort (alternatively titled Roch Roch Land, probably) is my favorite musical yet. It's kind of ridiculous, and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but the first word that comes to mind to describe it is FUN. It's so full of life in the dance numbers, the vivid colors that make up every frame, and the big smiles on everyone's faces. It has the romantic feel of a Classic Hollywood picture, but the dialogue and aesthetic sensibilities are so very French. The opening number with the two sisters in their apartment was my favorite, so the rest of the songs never resonated as strongly with me. The characters were a little flat, but solid performances bring them to life. I had to watch the first half of this on a turbulent flight, but it was still a great watch. More than anything, I'm just excited to finally be rating a musical this high.
