I can't tell if I'm tearing up because of how beautiful this film is, or because I've been staring at a screen for 7 hours and my eyes feel like they've been drenched in citric acid. Satantango is strange for many reasons. I don't know why Bela Tarr finds it necessary to film 10 minute long shots of cows trying to have sexual intercourse, but I'm glad he used this approach because of how immersive it is. I have a fetish for long takes. This film sucks you in, you feel like you're in a Hungarian village watching these people's lives unfold. In a shitstorm like suicide Squad the average shot length is probably a little over 2 seconds. How the fuck does a director think he can get audience members emotional invested and or immersed in their film if there's more cuts than lines of dialogue? I don't mean to turn this into a rant, but honestly Hollywood needs to step their shit up. The music is another thing about this film that's very unique, I can't describe what it's like but it sounds like it belongs in an 80's arcade game so I like it, plus it helps reinforce the fact that this isn't any ordinary film. Never before has black and white been utilized so well in a modern film, It's beautiful start to finish and it helps create the perfect atmosphere for a film like Satantango that deals with countless social issues. The only downside to the film is that there's a 45 minute long sequence of a drunk guy stumbling around his house, but other than that it's practically flawless. I already feel like I need to watch this again, but for now I'm very satisfied with it. I'd also like to mention that Irimias' speech is the greatest monologue of all time🙌🏻 Not my favorite, the greatest. I wish I could write a longer and more thoughtful review, but My head feels like it's about to explode from a lethal combination of sleep deprivation and having every emotion that I previously possessed drained, so I'm gonna go ahead and sleep for a few days.
