Io Capitano 2023
io capitano (2023) is a conventional narrative, albeit heartbreaking, gruelling, and challenging. its hints of surrealism really hit the spot, adding to the film's meditation on home, aspiration and the vastness of the world. sarr acts with real depth for his age, and the shooting locations are evocative and often overwhelmingly vast. it has some kitsch notes, but ultimately tells a devastating and universal tale.

The Quiet Girl 2022
MIFF 2022 film #8
such a tender, patient and poignant portrait of childhood, it reminded me how every moment at cait’s age shapes us. bairead is impressively understated in his pacing and rhythm, with blocking, light and silence often saying more than more obvious elements. it didn’t quite pack the emotional punch for me that i expected, but it was nonetheless powerful. won’t be able to shake the image of that lone biscuit.
