The Babadook ★★★★

Sleek and stylish, with lots of thought put into everything - from the fantastically crafted book, to the bleak and mostly grey colour palette, to the dark and dismal old house, and the subtle hints dropped here and there that you must piece together to get a full understanding of the story. Essie Davis gives an Oscar-worthy performance here. The movie was a lot scarier in the first half than the second, but it maintains its quietly unsettling atmosphere throughout, to conclude in a manner that requires some analysis on the part of the viewer.
