cait’s review published on Letterboxd:
“grief and rage—” anne carson writes, “you need to contain that, to put a frame around it. do you want to go down to the pits of yourself all alone? not much. what if an actor could do it for you?” the frames joanna hogg puts around her own grief are gorgeous, both universal and deeply personal. i’m thinking especially of the shot of the camera coming to julie’s hand, magnetic, making the act of fictionalising your tragedy feel wholly necessary. it’s a love letter to the art of filmmaking, how it can make space for grief that has no other place to go. and god– that final scene. i sat through the credits with my mouth wide open. gonna take some time to recover from this
