Surprisingly good, manages to compress something like A Passage to India into 100 minutes. It sounds terribly dated on paper and it can’t avoid a certain amount of special pleading/tragic mulatto tropes, but it’s dynamic and willing to get florid in a way that a lot of filmmakers would generally avoid, and it happily doesn’t end with the expected suicide. Gardner and Jackson are great. Even the voiceover, which isn’t 100% necessary, works.

A reasonable number of the jokes seem kind of funny on paper, but the execution demonstrates a pretty intermittent grasp of rhythm and pacing. There's so many scenes where the two leads just ramble on in their identical quirky accents, and it turns the film into an ambient fog where you can't quite tell if they're going to say something that will be relevant later, or it's just wheel-spinning in the fashion of all these post-Apatow productions.

It's probably impossible for anyone except Lewis Klahr to fully understand the meaning behind all of his choices, but this is just absurdly confident in its editing,…
