Managed to provide some smooth action, lush colour, and appropriate humour while treading nearly perfectly through some genuine thematic material. Ends up losing its balance by the end, but it made for enjoyable viewing nonetheless. A moderate step forward for the superhero genre, and a massive step forward for DC.
Phenomenal art direction, and it builds well on the themes from Prometheus. Every scene with David and Walter was fascinating. However, it suffers from being an Alien film...the sequences with the xenomorphs were consistently the weakest parts. Ultimately I preferred Prometheus; its lack of clarity made its thematic weight richer.
I love Mungiu's minimalism and social grit, the way he frames everyone in a scene of dialogue and never cuts. It feels natural and immediately engrossing. His masterful commentary on Romanian society while always emphasising the characters on screen ought to be a topic of study for the likes of Ken Loach.
