Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri ½

The conversation about this movie has rightfully moved to its confused and woeful politics but that sadly means that people aren't really discussing how incoherent and cliche the script is (although I agree with Miriam Bale that a racist movie and a poorly written one are one and the same, you haven't put the time, talent, and effort into detailing a whole segment of your characters and their interactions).

If I never see another scene of someone going into a loved one's room after their death and then having a flashback about a time they fought, the last time they saw them, or both in this case; I'll be a very happy moviegoer. Three Billboards was filmed in North Carolina but takes place in Missouri. When asked why, McDonagh just said he liked the way the title sounded. That explains a lot of the script level decisions: sounds nice but there is no aesthetic or thematic reason for them.
