The attitudes shown in this melodrama may have been a little more representative of the 1890s than the 1920s, but the story was told well and made me wonder what it must have been like for young girls in less liberated times. The rescue scenes toward the end of the film are well worth watching - they don't look as good as the modern CGI'd scenes that would be in their place nowadays, but have a much greater charm.
