It’s pretty surreal to finally be getting these movies that so accurately and poetically depict my upbringing. When you don’t have representation you learn to empathize with people who don’t look or think like you, and over time you forget the subtle simple joy of having culturally-specific aspects of your life validated in pop culture. It’s only when I watch a movie like this that I truly understand the value of being seen and of being represented on screen. We just didn’t have this growing up. But man does it make a world of a difference.
