Atonement 2007
Kids Say The Darnedest Things
One of my favorite types of movies is "one person's heartbreak also destroys everyone around them" and this is a definitive entry in that. It's practically an anti-romantic melodrama, claustrophobic even in the most pastoral scenes and planting as many false hopes in the viewer's mind as in the characters'. The respectable period-piece gloss is a very thin one on a story of a prolonged series of cruelties, astounding cream colors cast over miserable spaces.

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
A lot of unique ideas in this, and I can certainly appreciate how long it took to film, but this didn't emotionally resonate for me.

Terms of Endearment 1983
when shirley slaps the kid and then hugs him i cry and cry every time. thrilled to get to do it in public, mere seats away from a hot man !
shirley and jack doing little improvisations in every scene to get reactions out of each other is one of the great pleasures of the cinema
she married him for his cumgutters. little did she know, he was jeff daniels all along😔

Asako I & II 2018
i’ve heard the complaints (some just straight up nonsensical) but i think the biggest one is re asako’s character development — how she feels like a shell of a human in a movie full of meatier characters. i disagree! and second time around, i felt so achingly for her and, in a sense, like her, even behind the seemingly blank expressions. killed me when she said “even at a time like this, i can only think about myself.”

Asako I & II 2018
This contains one of the boldest tonal shifts I’ve seen in a while. When the moment comes, you realize that, in addition to being an off-kilter comedy of manners, this is a brilliant exploration of one woman’s trauma and neuroses. Better yet, while Asako is the movie’s heart, the film is also an understated ensemble epic, one that charts a group of shithead friends as they navigate the ups and downs of their 20s. There’s just a lot of life up on that screen. Oh, and there’s a shot of clouds breaking after a rainstorm that actually took my breath away. Wowie.

Asako I & II 2018
real IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA vibes from the lightly jokey shot-reverse shot meet-cute that opens the film, appropriately since this too is a riff on VERTIGO, in its play with desire and (formal and personal) bifucation.
So excited for DRIVE MY CAR—inevitable that after HAPPY HOUR and this, Gucci would want to adapt a Murakami story. Disappearances—a bold formal twist that raises ideas about the contingency of life and identity—are becoming his Thing. They're like earthquakes (another interest he…

The Northman 2022
it's nicole for me. she doesn't miss. her big scene felt like hearing "irreplaceable" by beyoncé for the first time. at this point the kidman signature is playing women who have convinced themselves of the god-given providence of their wretched circumstances. or have they? she chucks a wrench into the "believe women" machine. she acts blood and faith. i fear we have no choice but to stan

Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
a twee awesomesauce epic bacon bojack horseman-ass movie … i’m tempted to really lean into how much i didn’t enjoy this but i recognize that i might partially be reacting to its boggling popularity and also the audience at my screening sucked which made me feel self conscious. for now i’ll say the pacing and humour really really really didn’t work for me. ciao bella
