a surprisingly refrained feature from miike compared to others i've seen. this could have easily gone in a more schlocky direction a la smokin' aces as all of japan seemingly wants to collect a bounty on a child murderer who is being transported to tokyo. i envision machine gun toting grannies, chain wielding motorcycle gangs and priests with bazookas. instead this is a very thought provoking drama that forces you to consider what you would do if you were in the same situation as the protagonists. where do you draw the line between enacting justice and honoring duty.
