DA 12 DAYS OF SPIKE: DAY 5
Telling the story of what happened on that fateful day in Birmingham is easy. Conveying the monumental impact that day had on the families of the deceased, the black community in Birmingham, and the Civil Rights Movement across the country is very, very hard. Lee does the latter effortlessly. It's a little messy, but Lee weilds archive footage and talking heads to their full power in painting a moving and full image.
History repeats itself. Cops were racist pigs then, and they are now. Watching this now is sobering and sad, even more than it would have been in 1997.
