DA 12 DAYS OF SPIKE: BONUS 8
Eschews pretty much all the coolness that propelled the structure-light original. What's left is an interesting, but undoubtedly unrestrained and uneven mess, and yet, despite its stylistic strangeness and refusal to conform (similar to Red Hook Summer), it still feels unfortunately safe in comparison to Ganja and Hess. The best thing here is the updated themes and politics, especially w.r.t the characters and relationships, but they work inharmoniously with the rest of the film, which remains all too true in script and plot to it's '70s counterpart. I love Spike, but maybe pure genre (maybe? this movie is very hard to read) is not for him.
