A Nuclear Bomb explodes high above the heavens, taking down two titans. One is a God, the other a false God. I'm still not sure which is which.

Either way, that scene for some reason reminded me of DR. STRANGELOVE. The scene is a farce. Superman is absolutely decimating Doomsday and from the way it is going he could launch his foe into the sun if he wanted to. But the US launches its missile anyway. The end result, Doomsday literally rains down upon earth. The land on Rikers Island is scorched. It is reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. I laughed through this entire scene.

Cut to, the view from above. The explosion is seen from earth. A slow pan up first shows the horizon. We pause for a minute before we reveal Superman's face. He has succumbed to radiation and is still. But that stillness evokes images that were once seen in another Kucrick masterpiece: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Later when we cut back to this view, Superman is healed by the yellow sun. In space were nothing can survive, he not only lives, he flourishes. He is evolved. I was awestruck.

I don't think Zack Snyder intended any of this, and I'm still not sure it completely makes sense in the context of the rest of the movie.

But it doesn't matter. There is something spectacular in these moments regardless of intent. And there is something spectacular about this film.
