It lacks the nuance past “rape is bad” and fumbles along until the last chapter where it redeems itself. Could’ve done a lot more with its ideas. A less clumsily executed movie with similar tone would be Doubt with Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
A fight broke out in the beginning of this movie in my theatre so I missed the whole first 10 minutes but after that it was elite. Amazing world building, made me actually wanna get the book. Oskar Isaaks beard carried the film.
Temuera giving me some Tom hardy vibes in this one, didn’t know boba fett could act. Rena Owen acting her ass off too. Sad and all too real, except it’s gonna have me speaking like Korg from Thor for a week.
The lack of episode to episode cohesion may turn some off but the art style, soundtrack and badass fight choreography paired with awesome main characters and memorable side characters make this a one of a kind anime that stands out from the pack. Truly “samurai remixed”.
