Argie Ebofin’s review published on Letterboxd:
Now lets be straight, Batman v Superman is a mess, sure, but I found it to be a generally enjoyable mess. It has a hell of a lot of flaws in terms of storytelling, writing and direction but that didn’t stop the film from working for me, and the film does have many good aspects.
Lets start with the characters. Affleck was pretty good as an older, tired Bruce Wayne, while Henry Cavill was solid as Superman, although I do feel that he needs another solo film (a good one preferably) so that he can really showcase himself as the character, as the scripts haven’t really given him all that much to work with. I like Afflecks murdering psychopath batman though, I appreciate a change, although I would like it if we at least saw some sort of inner conflict from the character in respect to his killings. Then there is Gal Gadot as Wonderwoman who seems to be a really good choice, which I wasn’t really expecting. She really steals every scene she is in (and not because she is really hot) but because you really believe that she can kick some serious ass. Its definitely made me more excited for her solo film that’s for sure. Amy Adams as Lois lane is good, but I do feel like they did put too much emphasis on her character in the film, trying to make her way more important than she actually is. And finally we get to Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Hmm. Part of me found him to be interesting, but a bigger part of me found him to be totally over the top and poorly written. The character motivation is at times unclear, I mean what do we really know about Lex Luther? Why does he actually want to cause such destruction? As a villain, he just feels oddly placed in the dark, brooding atmosphere that DC have tried to develop.
In terms of action, Batman v Superman is very good, as we could all see from the trailer, with a number of excellent set pieces. One gripe I had was with the fight between batman v superman, while it was good, it was so short, with so much build up it did kinda feel anticlimactic that it was over so quickly. I must say I really wish I hadn’t seen the 2nd trailer for the film, it really did seem to show all the major plot points. Like I knew Batman and Superman would end up teaming up, but did we need to see Doomsday in the trailer????? Also, the pacing was kinda off at times as well, particularly during the first half, but I didn’t find that to be a massive problem.
Part of the films problem was that it was trying to be a number of different films rolled into one. It really did feel like a big trailer for the justice league movie, which im hyped for for sure, but I don’t need it thrown down my throat so much. I mean the bit where Wonder Woman watches clips of the other justice league members feels so damn forced but my god did it excite the fanboy inside of me. That really really should have just been in a post credits scene or something though, as it didn’t feel organic as it was. However, all in all, while the film does have its problems, its pretty damn fun and has got me more excited for what the rest DC has to offer. Lets just pray that they get some better directors. I hear that Nolan guy is pretty good????
