Like every previous year in late summer of the northern hemisphere, the 2021 Oscar race has began with the submissions of foreign language films to compete in the Best International Feature Film category of the 94th Academy Awards held in March 2022. Relative shortly after the official press announcements this list will be reflect the submission process with its compilation of ALL SUBMITTED FILMS from the various countries including all films eligible for consideration in the International Feature Film category [➽]. Since 1956 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents annually an Academy Award (widely known as Oscar) to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States and its overseas territories with a predominantly (more than 50%) non-English dialogue track and a running time over 40 minutes (according to the current rules). Fictional live action feature films, animated films and documentaries are allowed. Lots of film industries of various independent states and autonomous regions were invited to submit the best film of the year from their country. The submitted films of the year 2021 selection process had to be first released theatrically in their home countries between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021.

Last Year's Best International Feature Film Category of the 93rd Academy Awards

In order for films to more easily meet theatrical exhibition requirements in these coronavirus global pandemic times, the Academy will allow films to qualify outside the country of origin, provided the film is theatrically exhibited outside of the United States and its territories for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater for paid admission (same rule as usual). Because of the ongoing closure of commercial motion picture theaters worldwide due to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic country-selected films that had a previously planned theatrical release but are initially made available through a reputable commercial streaming distribution service or video on demand may qualify for Awards consideration in the International Feature Film category for the 94th Academy Awards under a few strong provisions.

Note that shortlistings, nominations and the award goes however to the country itself and not to the director. But in 2014 it was announced that now also the name of the winning director is engraved next to the country in the statuette!
