Drive My Car 2021
Genuinely might be my new favorite film.
Hidetoshi Nishijima is immaculate.
Not sure if this is on everyone’s radar but this has easily the best screenplay of the year.

The Northman 2022
Rewatched and confirmed Robert Eggers has made one of the best films of the year and one of my favorite films of all time. A feral and brutal masterpiece that deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Six Degrees of Separation 1993
From the cover this didn’t seem all that interesting but it took me by surprise with hands down Will Smith’s best performance onscreen as a charismatic and mysterious man named Paul, who claims to be the son of Sydney Poitier. Each story told by each character feels fleshed out as they explain their interactions with Paul that permeates New York City with lies and intrigue. Without spoiling too much, I will say the trepidation Stockard Channing’s character feels about the consequences…

The Tragedy of Macbeth 2021
I watched back to back bangers with this and Red Rocket. Loved the minimalist production design, something about the fake look of the sets added so much to the overall theater atmosphere. Denzel as Lord Macbeth and Kathryn Hunter were definitely the best performances of the film. This was a great way to start 2022.

The Power of the Dog 2021
Dark and complex with a standout nuanced performance by Benedict Cumberbatch. Slowly peels back and reveals itself and by the last 15 minutes completely recontextualizes the film as a whole which greatly enhanced my second viewing. Jonny Greenwood has now composed my two favorite scores of the year (this and Spencer) for my two favorite films of the year.
