"What's wrong with a Cowboy in Hamburg?"
Gorgeously shot by Robby Müller, The American Friend brims with Wenders's love for cinema (the instantly recognizable Nick Ray is in this, which is unbelievably cool). But what hit me most on first watch was the beautifully sensitive performance by the late great Bruno Ganz. His eyes are so soft and so honest. I absolutely adored this, it actually reminded me a bit of Midnight Cowboy, which I just had the pleasure of watching for the first time a few days ago. Similar graphic elements, not least a main character's eyes being shut for the last time in one of the final beats. RIP Bruno, Nick, and Dennis
