LUCA was enjoyable and pleasant and heartwarming but it also felt like something we’ve seen before.
I wanted so much more from this but I felt like the script was very paint by numbers and not really fleshed out.
Roy Scheider is one of the most underappreciated actors we’ve ever had. His legacy is most connected to JAWS for obvious reasons but his performance as Bob Fosse’s counterpart Joe Gideon is a masterclass. He was a magnificent and versatile character actor.
The film itself is also magnificent in its own right and I feel like Fosse’s heart and soul...with all of its flaws intact...are bared fully in this film and it’s like watching the most fucked up drug induced dream.
I saw a screening of MODERN TIMES at a movie theatre when I was 10 years old...I’m 32 now. I just rewatched the film for the first time in probably 12 years or so and my response to it was just as strong as ever.
While I do think CITY LIGHTS might be the better overall film, I can’t really say MODERN TIMES is that far behind. In fact, it may even be more entertaining.
The ending is on par…
