Definitely doesn't reach the heights of the previous trilogy, but it is very much a worthy successor.

It has a very slow and patient pacing, perhaps too patient? The 1st act in particular only sets up Noa's clan and customs, perhaps feeling a bit aimless. But it picks up the pace, and by the end both him and Mae have some very interesting character arcs set up. I hope the payoff is worth it.

And I still can't believe that these apes are all CGI, it's spectacular. The soundtrack is also damn effective, and Raka is the best character.

A fantastic concept that is also absurdly difficult to pull off, but this film manages it. It's a pretty incredible job to create tension using only one actor on screen, in only one room.

I'm curious to see how the American remake compares eventually

But Hopkins man, holy shit.

    The decision to present…

I've always seen myself as a big of animation, and yet had never watched a Ghibli film. Shameful.

Since they're adding the films to Netflix, it was the perfect excuse for me, and this seemed like the best start.

Now, this a pretty "nothing" movie. There's no plot, threat, character arcs, the closest thing to an antagonist is the goat that wants Mei's corn.

But it's so damn charming. I had the goofiest smile anytime Totoro or that Catbus was…
