Voice Without a Shadow ★★

Fairly boring thriller has Asako (Yoko Minamida) as a former telephone operator who heard the voice of a killer.  Years later, she might have run into that same person.  This would be a good plot reminiscent of Sorry Wrong Number, but that plot line is over in the first third of the run time!  Instead, it becomes the tale of reporter Ishikawa (Nikkatsu regular Hideaki Nitani) tracking down the new case.  Weirdly labyrinthine plot requires a five minute narrative explanation near the end of the film to explain the who-done-it and why, and that is never a good sign.  A few good framing shots and a train yard ‘accident’ doesn’t make up for the problematic story.
