    Gremlins 2: The New Batch


    Oh man, everything the vague Internet consensus has said about this film is true. It's zany, totally unhinged, and tons of fun.

    One thing more, though: it hits my sweet spot as a film that works as a sharp critique of modernity. Along with a handful of other late 80's films (RoboCop, How to Get Ahead in Advertising) it stands as an act of resistance to the creeping consumerism of the New Society. Good times.

    What a festering pile of garbage this film is. I can tolerate the other two entries in this series, but "Dawn Treader" completely betrays the spirit of the original, replacing it with a milquetoast, video-game-esque plot that might entertain toddlers, but is good for nothing.

    Despite the reputation of the Narnia series as some sort of preachy propaganda for Christianity (which is a complete mischaracterization), the books actually value the free play of the imagination; especially, I'd argue, "Dawn Treader",…
