Watching this movie was an interesting experience. It’s like all the good pieces are there but none of them are put together right for the film to be great.

I still enjoyed it though. Just not as good as I wanted it to be. Patel & James are the heart of the film & very cute. If you said Boyle directed this film, I would have been slightly surprised. The themes and vibe is him but the visuals lacked his usual style.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Overall, I was entertained by the film as a fun comedy. Thompson’s performance is superb. Katherine is rife with flaws - self-loathing, blunt, and unapologetically mean. I admire writing and directness in featuring a flawed woman. I wanted to be surprised and like this but I spent most of the movie doing small cringes inside. Script is cheesy & cringey and not in a way that’s entertaining to watch. The acting is not much better. They barely like chemistry. The dialogue felt so stilted. I liked the directing and how they conveyed the beauty of NYC but nice visuals actually make the heavy handedness of the script even more apparent.

Amazing! A few moments felt a little stilted to me but I see them as minor issues in an otherwise great film. Amazing visuals with the colors, shadows, and camera movement. In the visuals, you can feel the raw need for structure that Selah keeps in her life and faction.

The director cited the angst & savagery of Rihanna’s Anti album as her influence. Also, the clean lines in brutalism architecture. I don’t know what else you need to know to be on lookout for this!

I can't wait to see more work from this director and cast.
