BlacKkKlansman ★★★★

Spike is back with his strongest film since 25th hour, returning to in your face, race related film making that he is one of the masters of. Blackkklansman succeeds at getting its message across as well as being a thoroughly entertaining undercover story. This one succeeds at hitting you hard but it sometimes feels like the events we know well or the disgusting, controversial films of the past do more of the heavy lifting and Lee's filmmaking sometimes gets in the way. There are a couple scenes that were set up well to really hit you with a gut punch and then they just kind of fizzled. For me, Lee doesn't add another masterpiece to his ouvre but it is nice to have him back providing us with the type of intelligent, conversation starting filmmaking that put him on the map. Also, Washington and Driver are both excellent here.
