I’ll start with the good: our lead, the alien Sil, is great and has an engaging enough story that, though simple, keeps you interested. It certainly doesn’t hurt that she is absolutely gorgeous either considering how much that plays into the story of Species. The effects work is VERY good looking at times as well, thanks in large part to H. R. Giger’s (famous for his work in the Alien franchise and the father of the Xenomorph design) role in…

A movie with a lot of potential that just can’t seem to push any of it to the forefront. Characters are stale as ever and the plot is just as insane as it looks on paper (and not in a fun way unfortunately). The effects work on the rabbits is genuinely well done at times but the horrible makeup work on the “victims” just knocks it down so much further. It’s a fun time but I just don’t see anyone going back to revisit this without some kind of emotional attachment to the film.

Bobby Miller (writer and director) is best known for shorter form media and it definitely shows in this unique 2016 creature feature. Characters, story, and concept are all handled gracefully if a bit on the quirkier side. With few scares but filled to the brim with symbols, you’ll enjoy this one a lot if you’re prepared for an unusual blend of tragic storytelling and off-kilter humor. The biggest gripe I can find is that the story lends itself better to a short film than a feature length movie that feels a bit drawn out.

An incredibly cool monster concept that fumbled its execution. It's a lot of fun though, so I'm sure I'll check it out again for some Friday night fun.
